My experience with Morton's Chili Blend goes back to the 1950s. My father was a restauranteur in East Texas; in our house, we never considered using anything else.

When I Googled Morton's, I ran across a forum where the Gebhardt's aficionados were writing their "swear-by" testimonials. That's because it's the best they can find locally. Gebhardt's is widely available nationwide, and Morton's isn't. (Gebhardt's developed tremendous market penetration. Morton's, on the other hand, remained regional to Texas and is impossible to find, except by mail order, in most of the country.)

Morton's is superior. Shilling will do in a pinch, if you add cumin or comino and some other spices. Forget about Carroll Shelby, Wick Fowler, and all the other chili "kits". Just use copious amounts of Morton Chili Blend on your sauteed beef during the last two or three minutes of searing, then pour on some beer and simmer it for a while. No matter what chili "purists" say, you can use beans, onion, tomatoes, or add some corn, hominy, or a bit of masa for some Southwest flavor. Chili is a personal thing ... make it your way.

I have been using Morton's Chili Blend since the middle of the 1970's. I used it at home and in Chili Cookoffs all over Texas. I have won my share and alot of other peoples share of 1st place in Chili Cookoffs since the 70s. I finally gave my recipe to a very good friends daughter so she could enter into a cookoff. I told one of the main ingredients was Morton's Chili Blend. I told her don't even try it without it. She used it and won 1st place at her very first cookoff with 62 entrants. That's enough said.
